THE BENEFITS OF WOODEN BALANCE BOARDS

This could be one of the very best open-ended toys around! Why do we say this? Because there are so many benefits in this simple curved piece of wood…

Develops the Vestibular System

So, what is the vestibular system? The vestibular system is a sensory system that is responsible for feeding our brain with information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. It’s also involved with motor functions that allow us to keep our balance, stabilise our head and body during movement, and maintain our posture. It’s mainly found within the inner ear and It’s essential to all movement. This system is exactly what is being stimulated and developed when you use a balance board. It’s especially beneficial for children to develop this system as it’s used in all aspects of movement.

Exercise

Using a balance board is great exercise for children and adults too. It increases core strength and stability. Balancing helps to develop a good posture, and it improves gross motor coordination and weight distribution. Spatial awareness and proprioception (your body's ability to sense movement, action/effort, and positioning) will be challenged and developed.  Balance Boards are also the perfect wet weather indoor exercise and a good way to expend some energy on a rainy day at home. You can even do yoga routines using a balance board!

Balance

A balance board is great for practicing balancing skills in a safe environment. Balancing skills are so important and are used in loads of other activities like riding a bike, dancing, playing different sports and carrying out most normal day to day activities.

Confidence

Some children naturally love the sensory input from climbing, flipping, balancing and rolling - others find that they need some help to gain confidence in this area. A balance board is a great way to encourage these sorts of skills through playtime in a safe and familiar environment at home.

Play

Wooden balance boards are a perfect open-ended toy to encourage imaginative play. It might just look like a curved piece of wood but, to a child, it’s a boat, a shop counter, a bridge for a troll to live under, a castle wall, a cradle, a seesaw, and a slide!

Relaxation

Rocking motions are calming and relaxing. Why not use a cushion and a blanket too and get really comfy! You could read a book or watch your favourite family film.

Don’t just take our word for it though, check out this 5 star review from Claire!

Brilliant Balance Board

*****

Went hunting for this for a child's birthday present after seeing a video of it online. Puzzlebug had it at a great price. Really great toy. So far it's been a bridge, a slide, a chair for watching TV and a rocker. Children have played on it, toys and cars transported on it and a few adults have tried it as a balance board. Very happy with my purchase.
